In conversation with Matilde Burgos, Santelices admitted that he was never censored, even during the country’s darkest moments. “It was the power of independent journalism. (Mónica Comandari) knew who she was and knew what her magazine was. So no one came to her with stories—it was something truly remarkable,” he recalled.

Manuel Santelices is a Chilean artist and journalist whose career has long explored the worlds of fashion, society, and pop culture. With a degree in journalism, Santelices began his career in Santiago before moving to New York in 1992, where he became a foreign correspondent for COSAS, a leading Latin American lifestyle magazine. His sharp perspective and deep knowledge of fashion led him to contribute as a writer and editor for the Spanish editions of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ, and Esquire, and later for Vogue Mexico and Vogue Latin America.
